Signs of rats in the roof
Scratching at night, droppings and gnaw marks — how to tell if rodents have moved in overhead.
Roof rats are common in Perth homes, and the roof space is a favourite shelter. The clearest sign is scratching or scurrying noises at night, when rats are most active.
Other signs include droppings in the roof or ceiling cavity, gnaw marks on timber or wiring, and greasy rub marks along regular runways. Rats gnaw wiring, which is a fire risk, so it's worth acting on activity promptly.
Effective control combines baiting or trapping with exclusion — sealing the gaps that let rodents in. Baiting alone won't prevent new rodents entering through the same openings.
