How to identify a redback spider
The distinctive marking and web that help you recognise a redback — and when to seek help.
Redback spiders have a distinctive red or orange marking on the back of the abdomen, though it can vary in size and intensity. Females are roughly the size of a pea, dark brown to black, with a bulbous abdomen.
They build messy, tangled webs in sheltered, dry spots — under eaves, in sheds, around outdoor furniture, in letterboxes and in cluttered corners. If you're unsure what a spider is, professional assessment is safer than guessing.
Redbacks near play areas, sheds or outdoor furniture are worth treating. Most other spiders around WA homes are harmless and many are beneficial, so not every spider warrants control.
