How to identify termites
The signs that suggest termite activity — and what to do (and not do) if you spot them.
Termites often work concealed inside timber, so the damage can be well advanced before anything is visible. The most useful signs to look for are mud tubes, hollow-sounding timber, soft or damaged timber, and piles of discarded wings near windows or doors.
Mud tubes are thin, earthen lines running along foundations, walls or subfloor timbers. Termites use them to travel while staying moist and hidden. Hollow or soft timber — found by tapping skirting, doorframes and structural timber — can indicate internal feeding.
If you see any of these signs, don't disturb the area or spray it yourself. Disturbing termites can scatter the colony and make professional treatment harder. Arrange a termite inspection promptly instead.
